Dear Prospective Student,
Do you have an inner warrior calling (or screaming) to be set free?
That inner warrior is YOU.
The you who is tired of being boxed in by the Patriarchy’s bullshit.
The you who knows, KNOWS there is more to life than your job, happy hour, shuttling kids (if you have them), scrolling on Instagram, and Bridgerton (don’t get us wrong, we love Bridgerton).
The you who believes your body is made for more than grocery shopping, sitting, and getting winded going up stairs.
The you who is done hiding your strengths, done trying to prove your worth, done pretending just to fit in, done incessantly apologizing, done being mean to your body, done feeling shame about your opinions, your ambition, your dreams, your leg hair, your love of oreo cookies, your existence.
DONE.
Enter Muay Thai, the combat art of Thailand, “the Art of Eight Limbs,” and a phenomenal tool of liberation.
How so?
We’ll be straight up with you. Muay Thai can be exceedingly uncomfortable. And it is not for everyone.
Think learning a new way to stand and move around in space. Add in massive complexity with punches, kicks, knees, elbows, offense, defense, footwork, angles, counters, endless combos and variations, the list goes on and it can happen all at once. PLUS doing this with training partners in real time, there’s nothing quite like having someone dependent on you while you struggle to learn new things..
Yes, we will guide you every step of the way and you WILL improve, but it can still be challenging, confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming at times. Ask any of our students, they will attest to this.
But they will also attest to the MAGIC.
They will attest to the discomfort being absolutely worth it.
You will develop physical skills that will not only make you feel like a superhero ninja badass, but will also give you serious self-defense abilities. This is great. We love it. Feeling like we could actually be Vi and Caitlyn (Arcane. Watch it.) is awesome. But that’s only a teeny bit of the magic.
Your real metamorphosis,
your butterfly-bursting-from-the-chrysalis,
your phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes moments will come from the INTERNAL shifts.
Training Muay Thai, especially the LKE Dojo way, means learning to be okay with a lot of things like being vulnerable, asking for help, setting boundaries, speaking loudly, leading, responding with intention, being patient, communicating clearly, doing hard things, being submerged in uncertainty, forgiving yourself, and asking for what you need.
And as you learn to feel increasingly okay with these things, eventually you are going to find you are more resilient, you care less what others think, and the chips weighing down your shoulders have gone missing.
You will find you are more open to new people/activities/jobs/adventures/education because discomfort? Easy.
You will find you are better at taking care of yourself, that you are more disciplined, that destructive habits are easier to break and new habits are easier to build.
You will find yourself calm, or able to access calm way more quickly, when the car doesn’t start or your father won’t stop talking about how honest Fox News is.
You will discover you are speaking more kindly to yourself, coming with self-compassion instead of harsh criticism and punishment.
You will notice you are able to choose intentional action from a place of love instead of erratically reacting to fear. This is how you know the chains that have held you your whole life are beginning to disintegrate.
Ultimately, we want to help you develop untouchable, rock-solid, rooted-in-like-the-largest-redwood self-love, self-trust, and self-safety.
Because when Women+ truly possess self-love, trust, and safety?
We no longer bend to what society is telling us we should be, we know who we are, love it, and live it LOUD.
We no longer feel the need to prove to our mom, our ex from five years ago, our asshole boss, and whoever was mean to us between the ages of 3 and 18 that we are worthy because we KNOW we are worthy and ENOUGH ALL OF THE TIME, period.
We are no longer dependent on outside circumstances–like having a sane leader of our nation–to protect us because we are safe in ourselves, because we are our own ride-or-dies, because we know that no matter what happens we can get up again, dust ourselves off, and keep going.
When we possess self-love, trust, and safety? We can finally be FREE.
Yes, it will take time. But the time will pass anyway. The years will pass anyway. Who you become over those years? Well. That is up to you.
Ready to leap? Come. We are waiting for you with open arms.
Love,
Coach Aileen & Coach Angela
Excited about our LKE Dojo flavor of liberation and freedom but…
Been mostly sedentary for years?
Never really had a serious movement passion/hobby (sports, dance, martial arts, yoga, etc.) ?
Returning from injury?
Yes, Muay Thai is hugely transformative, but the KEY is discomfort. Lucky for you, we know how to make you uncomfortable in beautiful ways outside of Muay Thai. There are many paths to cultivating self-love, trust, and safety, here are some options:
SATURDAY SERIES 12PM (Focus rotates, upcoming Series will be announced on our website and social media.)
If you want to join our tribe but need to build up to Muay Thai classes, join our 12pm Saturday Series. Series are either 4 or 6 weeks long, and focuses rotate through foundational non-Muay Thai topics including Strength & Mobility, Balance & Coordination, etc. Some students love our 12pm series so much they just stay there and don’t do Muay Thai AT ALL, which is totally fine. Like we said in The Letter, Muay Thai is not for everyone, but building the body from the ground up in our 12pm Series can be uncomfortable, glorious, and life-changing.
SATURDAY SERIES 1:30 PM (Focus rotates, upcoming Series will be announced on our website and social media.)
Want to dip your toe in? We offer Absolute Beginner Intro Series (where we progress slower than usual) as well as self-defense in this time slot. If you’re unsure of kicking (kicking requires strong ankles/knees, decent mobility, and physical sturdiness), wait for a Series like Intro to Boxing where you will not kick at all.
NON-MOVEMENT SMALL GROUPS (Topic rotates, upcoming small groups will be announced on our website and social media.)
Also keep an eye out for our non-movement small groups, where you can build and flex your emotional and spiritual muscles. Yes, sometimes (or a lot of times depending on the topic) people cry and then we all become even closer. Again, discomfort produces magic and we all know diving into our internal world, questioning our beliefs, examining the stories we tell ourselves, and getting vulnerable can be reeeeeally uncomfortable. And freeing.
The moral of the story is, you don’t necessarily have to be passionate about Muay Thai to join our tribe and rise like a Phoenix. We got you.
